The Role

 

The Application Development Scientist in the Architectural Coatings is part of the AFP Coatings & Ink Technology Division and is based in Ghent, Belgium. The scientist will report to the EMEA C&I Group Leader, while for project work to teams in Asia and the US. Eastman is the leading producer of coalescent solvents and neutralizing amines for decorative coatings applications and the scientist will be responsible for supporting development of new products and new applications for the existing product lines. The scientist will play a key role in successful execution of projects that support the long-term market strategy, which day to day will involve planning, execution and reporting of the laboratory activities in timely fashion. They will oversee the activities of lab technicians, support their time planning, prioritize and ensure that the tests are of the right quality and are performed to the industry recognized standards. The scientist needs to be a team player as will work on the interface of marketing, product development/synthesis and sales teams and be the external customer liaison. They will act as a key point of contact for any customer related activities around early adoptions in the region by collecting insights, providing guidance, and solving problems. 

 

Responsibilities

 

  •  Following the stage gate process apply deep understanding of architectural coatings and regulatory requirements to develop new products or new applications for existing products that enable coatings formulators to differentiate performance, reduce cost and increase efficiency
  • Network with a cross functional team across R&D, marketing, sales and manufacturing to develop products and understand the application of these products so that they can be translated quickly from the lab to commercial scale
  • Work with global teams focused on new application development projects for architectural coatings
  • Determine fitness-for-use criteria for specific architectural coatings applications and reduce these to formulation characteristics using knowledge of coatings structure-process-property relationships
  • Select raw materials for starting point formulations to test developmental latexes, pigments, coalescents, and other additives
  • Provide technical support to manufacturing and QC organizations during product scale up and commercialization.
  • Develop new technical literature to support new products, applications or techniques
  • Establish peer level connect with co-suppliers and customers to identify potential opportunities for synergies and joint development.
  • Provide regular insights on new technologies, applications and competitive solutions in the Architectural segment and play a key role in development of Eastman’s intellectual property strategy.
  • Oversee testing of coatings to industry standards

Also

  • Support quality, health, and safety initiatives as they relate to formulation, material safety, and technical data sheets.
  • Attend trade shows / technical conferences to align with market trends and establish/strengthen market connect
  • Travel to customers to discover needs, match fitness for use characteristics with product offerings, and support the engagements through final commercialization.
  • Manage customer laboratory work at Eastman: plan, execute and report. 
  • Mentor and support development of technicians.
  • Works closely with the European technical service team and Eastman’s customers to support them on new product launches.

 

Required Skills

 

Required

 

  • Master’s Degree in Polymer Science, Coatings Science, Chemistry, Engineering or a related field. Ideally have a knowledge of other coatings systems besides architectural.
  • 5 years of relevant architectural coatings formulation experience (water and solventborne), including materials selection, paint preparation, and paint testing. A knowledge of the numerous VOC voluntary and compulsory regulations. 
  • Experience working with external customers including raw materials suppliers.
  • Technical Project leadership experience with a proven track record of commercializing new products.
  • Fluent in English both written and spoken and knowledge of other European languages.  

 

Preferred

 

  • A knowledge of other coatings products in the transportation, protective, can coil and ink or building and construction industries.
  • Ability to discover and understand customer needs. Identify areas for new sales opportunities for coatings products (i.e. new development products and understanding new applications for Eastman’s existing products combined with understanding when not to pursue an opportunity. 
  • A desire to learn new coatings technologies and increase understanding of the customer’s applications. 
  • Strong communication & influencing skills, effective with all levels being able to interact with different groups and create strong network relationships including customers.
  • Ability to use Microsoft Office suite, DOE and statistical analysis software.
  • Network with a cross functional team across R&D, marketing, sales and manufacturing to develop products and understand the application of these products. Write concise and timely reports.
  • Access to external network including institutes, chemical distributors, formulating consortia.
  • A second language is very desirable, Flemish, Dutch, French or German.
