Responsibilities

The Advanced Materials Technology group is looking for a Research Scientist to help drive programs focused on design and development of wedge based interlayer films for automotive Head up Display (HUD) applications.  An ideal candidate would have a background in polymers or materials science, extensive hands-on laboratory experience, a willingness to learn new disciplines, and an ability to contribute in early stage development programs.  The candidate should be able to communicate effectively and function in an innovative, fast-paced, multidisciplinary team environment.  This position reports to the HUD technology leader, and is based out of Eastman’s Springfield, Massachusetts Technology Center.

Key Responsibilities Include:

•    Willingness to learn the special challenges of HUD system design and how interlayer product contributes to system success.
•    Successfully engage across the organization collaborating with other R &D functions, Technical Service, New Business Development, Marketing and Product management to identify key unmet needs of targeted customers.
•    Improving the customer experience by innovation. Continually gaining knowledge of parts, competitors and customers and transforming them into innovative proposals, designs or developments. 
•    Translate the identified needs into well-defined technical criteria for planning and execution of scientific projects which provide innovative, optimized and value-added technical solutions to the customers and the markets.
•    Demonstrate the appropriate use of statistical tools to solve complex problems.
•    Serve as technical expert to interact with internal and external stakeholders regarding wedge based interlayers.

Qualifications

•    PhD in Chemical Engineering, Materials Engineering, Polymer Engineering or Materials Science with 0-5 years of relevant industrial experience.
•    Knowledge of Process-Structure-Property-Performance relationships in polymeric systems (coursework/internship/co-op experience allowed).
•    Knowledge of polymer processing (e.g. Extrusion) a plus.
•    Be self-driven and comfortable defining a research path.
•    Demonstrated ability to analyze data, draw conclusions, present findings to peers and management and document results through publications and presentations.
•    Demonstrated ability to work independently and in a team.
•    Strong ability to clearly communicate technical concepts at appropriate levels for a given audience.
