Responsibilities

The Advanced Materials Technology group is looking for a Research Scientist to help drive programs focused on developing new technologies in interlayer films and laminated glazing for automotive Head up Display (HUD) applications.  An ideal candidate would have a background in polymers or materials science, extensive hands-on laboratory experience, a willingness to learn new disciplines, and an ability to contribute in early stage development programs.  The candidate should be able to communicate effectively and function in an innovative, fast-paced, multidisciplinary team environment.  This position reports to the HUD technology leader, and is based out of Eastman’s Springfield, Massachusetts Technology Center.


•    Design and development of polymer interlayers for automotive and architectural display applications.
•    Generation of interlayer films through laboratory mixing, compounding, and extrusion operations.
•    Fabrication of glass laminate test samples, product prototypes, and windshield demonstration units.
•    Development of analytical techniques and equipment to assess critical performance properties.
•    Effective use of hands-on experimentation to validate hypotheses and drive product design.
•    Consolidation of fundamental scientific knowledge to create next generation interlayers.
•    Contribution as an active member of development teams, from inception to commercialization.
•    Development and contribution to meeting project deliverables, individually and in team settings.
•    Communication of results through effective written documentation and oral presentations.
•    Interaction with Manufacturing, Quality, WW Technology, Sales and Marketing groups.

Qualifications

•    Degree in Polymer Science, Material Science, or equivalent degree with a focus on polymers.
•    Masters with 5 years or Ph.D. degree, with 2-5 years of laboratory experience preferred.
•    Broad background in structure/property relationships.
•    Excellent communication skills, verbal and written.
•    High level of initiative, with ability to work individually and in teams.
•    Excellent organization, planning and multi-tasking skills.
•    Experience with experimental design, data analysis and standard software packages. 
•    Physically capable of lifting, pushing, pulling, swinging tools, operating hand tools and equipment.
•    Willingness to travel, as required (<10%).
