This position is part of the Saflex® team. You will be joining a high caliber technical team as a critical member in our Automotive Interlayers Application Development Group located in Springfield, MA.

Job Description: 
Our ideal candidate should have a background in polymer science, materials science, or other closely related field. A successful candidate will be expected to develop a knowledge of mechanical damping, sound attenuation, and noise reduction with polymeric materials and films with constrained layer structures. The candidate will also develop and implement test methods to measure and evaluate critical performance criteria for acoustic and mechanical properties in automotive glazing. This role requires a fast-fail mindset through prototype demonstration via lab and pilot plant processes. We also expect extensive hands-on laboratory experience, a willingness to learn new disciplines, and an ability to contribute to business-critical innovations. Additionally, a working familiarity with computer modeling utilizing FEM and other methods is preferred.

Direct Responsibilities:

•    Application development of polymer materials, films, and interlayers for transportation acoustic applications.
•    Generation of polymeric materials, films, and interlayers through laboratory mixing, compounding, and extrusion operations.
•    Fabrication and performance evaluation of test samples and product prototypes.
•    Development of test techniques, methods, and equipment to assess critical performance properties.
•    Effective application of acoustic modeling to guide and drive product design.
•    Fast-fail mindset through prototype demonstration via lab and pilot plant processes.
•    Engage across the organizations and collaborate with other research and application functions and business units to identify key unmet needs of targeted customers.
•    Development and contribution to meeting project deliverables, individually and in team settings.
•    Communication of results through effective written documentation and oral presentations.

Qualifications

•    PhD in Polymer Science, Materials Science/Engineering, or other relevant field of study. All career levels will be considered in this role.
•    Broad background in structure / mechanical and rheological properties relationships.
•    Knowledge of mechanical damping, sound attenuation, and noise reduction by polymeric materials.
•    Knowledge of and application experience with acoustic modeling in preferred.
•    Experience in market discovery and customer engagements is a plus.
•    High level of initiative, with ability to work individually and in teams.
•    Experience with experimental design, data analysis and statistical tools.
