This posting is for a Research Scientist in the Advanced Materials Interlayers Technology Organization at Eastman Chemical Company located in Springfield,  Massachusetts.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Design and develop new polymer interlayer products for architectural glazing, specifically for high performance applications such as structural, hurricane and bullet-proof markets.
  • Design and execute experiments to develop fundamental knowledge on how polymer structure influences end-use performance characteristics
  • Use statistical tools and modeling to interpret results of multi-variable experiments and DOE’s
  • Conduct lab and pilot scale process development efforts for new polymer formulations.
  • Develop new test methods and characterization techniques for better fundamental understandings of materials
  • Provide technical support to manufacturing, engineering, and QC organizations during product scale up and commercialization
  • Independently manage multiple projects simultaneously
  • Lead small project teams on development and capabilities efforts
  • Collaborate closely with applications development, technical service, and marketing representatives in new product development efforts
  • Attend trade shows/technical conferences to align with market trends and establish/strengthen market connect

 

Qualifications:

 

  • Masters degree in Chemical Engineering, Mechanical Engineer, Material Science/Engineering, Polymer Science/Engineering, or related field is required
  • Minimum 3 years relevant experience is preferred   
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Strong understanding of mechanical behavior of engineering materials, specifically plastics
  • Strong understanding of structure-processing-property relationships
  • Strong background in Chemistry and Polymer Science is preferred
  • Critical thinking and problem-solving skills
  • Strong commitment to task; ability to organize, prioritize and execute multiple projects simultaneously within a high activity environment
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and in cross-functional teams
  • Project management/leadership experience is preferred
  • Experience with Lean Six Sigma tools is preferred
