The Mechanical Design and Development Engineer provides support to our Advanced Interlayers Technology team in Springfield, Massachusetts.   This team is responsible for applications research, development, and scale up of our high performance interlayers used in the Architectural and Automotive markets.

 

Major Position Responsibilities

  • Provide mechanical engineering expertise in support of Technology process and product development projects.  Plan and execute mechanical design activities from pilot scale testing through commercialization. 
  • Project team member for Technology development and capital projects for the Pilot Plant
    • Responsible for liaison between project and Pilot Plant teams.
    • Responsible for planning/executing mechanical engineering aspects of capital projects
    • Responsible for developing plans to design/scope/quote/build equipment and modification to equipment and current processes
  • Identify and implement cost reduction, capacity and process improvement projects such as:
    • Asset effectiveness management improvements
    • Process optimization
    • Statistical Process Control
    • Mechanical reliability, etc.
  • Manage the Pilot Plant maintenance activities including preventative maintenance, shutdown activities, predictive maintenance, equipment calibrations, regulatory compliance and safety. 
  • Provide back-up for Pilot Plant supervisor and shift relief for Pilot Plant technicians when necessary. 

   

Qualification Requirements

  • A Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering with 5 or more years of experience in an industrial setting.
  • Candidate must be a self-starter, with demonstrated ability to work independently and in a team. 
  • Practical knowledge in the design, development and operation of polymer processing machinery.  Experience with extrusion, mixing, sheet forming, embossing, web/roll handling and process safety systems is preferred.
  • Expertise with CAD / CAM software.  Demonstrated familiarity with process control systems – specifically Delta V is preferred
  • Attention to detail and good written and verbal communication skills.
  • Strong work ethic and ability to organize/prioritize and execute assignments in a high activity environment. 
  • Willingness to travel to the world-wide SaflexÒ manufacturing sites and work with outside vendors
