Tire Additives (TA) technology division is searching for a Group Leader (GL) to lead the Applications Development and Technical Service (ADTS) team for the Asia Pacific (AP) region. The selected individual will be based out of Eastman office in Shanghai. The GL will lead a team of ADTS scientists/engineers based in various parts of Asia, a team of technicians in Shanghai, and rubber compounding/tire materials testing laboratory in Shanghai. The GL will be responsible for supporting current core business and growth ambitions of Eastman’s TA business/technology for the AP region. The GL will also be responsible for safe and efficient operation of the rubber compounding/tire materials testing laboratory and ensure recommendation of the most suitable products for customer needs, investigate various customer product/application/quality issues, develop new applications of commercial products and execute joint projects with customers/co-suppliers/service providers. The GL will also be responsible for selection, coaching, and retaining qualified staff that contribute to division, business and company goals. He/she will ensure the highest quality performance through feedback, training, and development of the team members.  The GL is also responsible for the alignment of the strategic direction of the team with that of the business/ technology and for overseeing operational results of the AP ADTS team as per agreed technology/business matrices.  The GL will work to communicate and execute the business/technology strategy and set expectations for group members. The GL shall champion and drive safety first behavior, project execution, critical thinking, and problem solving with a sense of urgency on the group’s deliverables.

 

Major Responsibilities include:

• Maintain an effective safety and wellness culture including driving auditing, training and general awareness.  Lead by example through active participation in department Health, Safety, Environment, and Security (HSES) programs.

• Coach and develop direct reports by (a) ensuring each direct report understands their alignment with the business and their impact on short and long term financial success; (b) utilizing the performance management process; (c) expect and reward exceptional performance; and (d) utilizing the disciplinary process when appropriate

• Institutionalize critical thinking, partner engagement, and project execution focus and discipline

• Know the direct reports’ strengths, development needs and career interests

• Create and implement a vision for the group to support the short and long-term business, technology, and asset strategies.

• Lead the establishment of effective cross-functional, inter-group, and inter-divisional relationships

• Define clear, prioritized workplans for team members in accordance with company needs, and monitor progress of the plans.

• Execute technology strategy to support the business; Identify and execute initiatives for new product lines, process improvements and productivity initiatives

• Attract, engage, develop and retain the talent needed to provide people capable of implementing current and future programs

 

• BS or higher degree in Polymer Science, Polymer Engineering, Rubber science & technology, Macromolecular Science, Materials Science, Chemical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or Chemistry or equivalent from an accredited college or university is required

• Minimum 10 years of industrial experience is required. Minimum 5 year of experience in managing personnel is required.

• Prior industrial experience with running rubber compounding and analytical labs including a strong background in the principles of compounding, processing and industrial scale-up concepts in rubber/tire industry is preferred

• Working knowledge of potential commercial issues, contracting, and/or Intellectual Property & Trade Secrets is a plus

• Demonstrated competency with market discovery, developing customer/market segment specific product strategy and managing portfolio of customer facing project pipeline is preferred

• Ability to understand and guide work within a matrix-enabled organization

• Demonstrated excellent written and verbal communication skills; Ability to communicate the right level of detail to the right audience, at the right time. Fluent in English.

• Self-starter, driven by the investigation, discovery, and execution with a sense of urgency.

• Demonstrated ability to prioritize, make assignments, and ensure execution in a high activity environment
