The role

The Trade Compliance Manager – EMEA works within the Global Trade Compliance team to develop and execute trade-related processes and takes all appropriate measures to establish and maintain an effective, risk-based trade compliance program within the region. This position relies on experience, judgment and leadership to ensure achievement of corporate business objectives and operational goals while ensuring compliance with all legal and risk-mitigation requirements.

 

The Trade Compliance Manager - EMEA will advocate Eastman’s interests to government agencies to ensure fair and 
advantages interpretations of regulations. This role must be independent and objective, with an ability to stay organized under demanding circumstances.

 

This position requires excellent leadership and interpersonal skills. The ideal candidate for this position is a problem-solver, a collaborative thinker, a 
business-minded compliance professional, as well as a regional trade policy and process leader, experienced in managing a team of trade professionals and in developing collaborative relationships with other departments and business leaders in a fast-paced, multi-national corporate environment.

Responsibilities

  • Oversee the Global Trade Compliance function within the EMEA region (Europe, Middle East and Africa) and coordinate activities with the broader corporate team. 
  • Ensure management and employees are in compliance with the trade-related rules and regulations of regulatory agencies and that company trade-related policies and procedures are being followed.
  • Ability to manage team of regional trade compliance specialists.
  • Ability to lead through influence including collaboration with team members in all levels of the organization.
  • Provide insight to the Director, Global Trade Strategy & Compliance on activities within the region.
  • Develop and maintain policies and procedures for trade-related activities, and develop and execute audit program to evaluate implementation and compliance with policies by trade operations.
  • Evaluate and implement appropriate Customs valuation strategies for product destinations.
  • Oversight of "know your customer" programs under applicable law and company policy for impacted products and determine and evaluate all "red flags".
  • Oversee and execute day-to-day operations of the Global Trade Compliance program within EMEA region, including overseeing order-level screen evaluations and releases and documentation of compliance controls.
  • Oversee preparation, submission, and administration of import and export licenses, agreements, and miscellaneous correspondence to cognizant government agencies.
  • Collaborate with other company functions for all related import/export matters to ensure compliance. 
  • Comprehensive understanding of duty mitigation opportunities, including free trade agreements (FTAs) and duty suspension programs.
  • Assist in augmenting an effective compliance training program, including appropriate introductory training for new employees as well as ongoing training for all relevant employees.
  • Develop and conduct periodic audits of regional compliance program and develop systems to measure compliance.
  • Assist in the coordination of the compliance activities of other departments and conduct audits to assess performance and gather/record data to identify trends.
  • Identify potential areas of compliance vulnerability and risk.
  • Provide reports on a regular basis on the implementation and progress of compliance efforts as directed or requested. 
  • Respond to inquiries from customers and government agencies.
  • Maintain expertise in trade-related regulations and trends through on-going education and participation in relevant governmental and trade association meetings.
  • Negotiate with and advocating Eastman positions to government agencies to ensure fair and advantages interpretations of regulations regarding our products.
  • Monitor regional legislation, regulations and rule-making impacting Eastman's trade interests and the chemical industry; provide policy recommendations to best achieve outcomes favorable to Eastman.
     

Qualifications

  • At least a Bachelor's degree, for example in Customs and Trade, International Business, Supply Chain, Law or related studies.
  • At least 3 years of experience in a similar leadership role
  • High ethical standards
  • Knowledge of relevant laws and regulations
  • A proven track record of excellence in Import/Export processes and compliance managementStrategic approach to international trade
  • Proven ability to negotiate fair and advantages interpretations of regulations with respective government agencies
  • Solution oriented with a bias for action
  • Ability to lead through influence including collaboration with team members in all levels of the organization 
  • Excellent social skills; optimistic and adaptable

  • Fluent in English
  • Knowledge of SAP
