The Applications and External Innovation group based in Eastman’s Kingsport, Tennessee is looking for a Research Scientist to help drive innovation programs focused on developing new technologies in polymer materials, films, interlayers and laminated glass for automotive and architectural acoustic glazing applications.  

An ideal candidate should have a background in polymer science or materials science, extensive hands-on laboratory experience, a willingness to learn new disciplines, and an ability to contribute in early stage development programs.  Knowledge of computer modeling is an add-on but not required.  The candidate should be able to communicate effectively and function in an innovative, fast-paced, multidisciplinary team environment.  This position reports to the Polymer Synthesis and Applications leader, and is based in Eastman’s Kingsport, Tennessee.

The responsibility of this position includes

  • Executing effective experimentation involving lab scale preparations, characterization, and evaluations of polymers.
  • Effective working knowledge of structure - property relationships and polymer characterizations 
  • Reducing application fitness-for-use criteria to fundamental polymer characteristics leading to design, preparations, and assessments of novel polymer compositions & architectures. 
  • Development of test techniques, methods, and equipment to assess critical performance properties.
  • Engage across the organizations and collaborate with other research and application functions and business units to identify key unmet needs of targeted customers.
  • Translate the identified needs into well-defined technical criteria for planning and execution of scientific projects 
  • Development and contribution to meeting project deliverables, individually and in team settings.
  • Communication of results through effective written documentation and oral presentations.


  • PhD in Polymer/Material Science or related fields with 0-5 years of relevant industrial experience is preferred
  • Broad background in structure/property relationships
  • Knowledge of mechanical damping, sound attenuation, and noise reduction by polymeric materials and films and test methodologies is desirable but not required
  • Knowledge of and experience with finite element analysis modeling is desirable but not necessary
  • Excellent communication skills, verbal and written.
  • High level of initiative, with ability to work individually and in teams.
  • Excellent organization, planning and multi-tasking skills.
  • Experience with experimental design, data analysis and statistical tools.
