Responsibilities
SUMMARY DESCRIPTION: This position is responsible for managing all aspects of large scale, complex, and significant engineering projects, including the implementation of new processes and installation of equipment for large- and mega- project investments. Serves as engineering leader on projects to ensure safe and proper installations that meet cost and schedule requirements and achieve the business objectives of the investment. Instructs, directs, and checks the work of other project engineers. Partners with EPC contractor, vendors, licensors, and other partners through engineering design phases including FEL2, FEL3, and detailed design to implement capital projects so they are completed on time and within budget. Performs project work and prepares and submits appropriation requests and purchase requisitions for plant capital projects. Identifies, manages, and proactively mitigates risks associated with the implementation of such projects. Position requires a broad scope of responsibility and high levels of initiative.
REPORTING: Direct to Project Director. No direct reports.
KEY RESULT AREAS: (Top 5 to 8 accountabilities)
Oversee activity of engineers, designers, contractors, vendors and outside engineering firms to ensure safe and proper installations in order to protect plant assets
Identify and implement productivity improvements
Prepares and submits appropriation requests for large capital projects
Prepares and recommends purchase requisitions for large capital projects
Ensures completion of engineering deliverables required to progress project through gates and to support successful project execution, startup and commissioning
Partners with and oversees contractor engineering work and may have final approval of process and installation design
Implements and facilitates the execution of capital projects so they are completed on time and within budget
Develops preliminary cost estimates in support of capital budgeting process
Oversees safe and successful project startups and closure of outstanding project punchlist items
Prepares period project status update reports and budget tracking analysis
OTHER JOB DUTIES:
Project work including estimating costs, economic evaluation, specifying equipment, cost tracking, permitting, legislative compliance, developing contractor scope of work documents, construction supervision and start-up support, etc.
Manage equipment installations which may be during off-production times, including Sundays and Holidays
Prepare design and installation drawings and help determine project deadlines and priorities
Builds safety and plant environmental compliance into project designs and installation
Supports development of environmental and other legislative permitting applicable to the project
Qualifications
EDUCATION: B.S. in Chemical or Mechanical Engineering.
EXPERIENCE: Minimum 10 years’ experience in project management or in a project engineering role in the petrochemical industry. Project management certification a plus.
TECHNICAL COMPETENCIES, KEY SKILLS & ABILITIES:
Demonstrated competence in handling capital projects from design phase through execution
Ability to prioritize multiple tasks
Strong written, listening and verbal communication skills
Have the ability to respond to call outs and flexibility to work overtime and extended hours during weekdays (including weekends and holidays, if needed)
Have a strong background in computer software applications such as SAP, Microsoft Project, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Access, etc.
Familiarity with code requirements and using process safety tools (PHA, MOC, Root Cause Analysis, etc)
Be a team player in a team environment
Ability to exert influence in situations where direct control is limited
Good interpersonal skills
Highly motivated, self-directed attitude is a must
Strong background in environmental regulation is a plus
