Role Description


This is an entry/mid-level role to support decision-making across Eastman’s businesses and corporate functions utilizing optimization and simulation techniques to solve complex problems.

The essence of the role is translating business needs into mathematical problems and solutions and then delivering answers that are understandable, insightful, and actionable. You will accomplish this by working with team members.

This is a challenging role that requires substantial technical skill including programming and mathematical/statistical techniques, business acumen, and ability to communicate effectively in a variety of mediums.




  • Working as part of a team, assist with the translation of business needs into operations research questions, then, assist with the translation of model answers into business insight and assist with the communication of findings to the appropriate individuals
  • Assist with the development and support of operations research solutions to enable decision-makers to address questions of an ongoing or repetitive nature
  • Developing understanding of Eastman’s data and relevant data external to Eastman as well as how to bring it to bear to maximize its utility
  • Networking with clients to develop an understanding of the products, processes and challenges faced by select areas
  • Work collaboratively with other members of the Data Science organization as well as embedded business analysts to ensure the operations research needs of Eastman are met


Functional Skills and Capabilities:


  • Deep understanding of at least one area and familiarity with another one is a must:
  • Optimization (Linear, Non-linear and Integer Programming etc.)
  • Simulation (Discrete-Event, Monte-Carlo, Agent-based etc.)
  • Programming experience in Python, C#, VB.NET, R or similar language, including object-oriented development and agile project techniques
  • Familiarity with data querying, processing and visualization using relational data bases, flat files, SQL, Excel, Power Query, Power BI, Tableau etc.
  • Communication (written and oral) to a variety of audiences (one-on-one, groups, leadership)

Education and Experience



  • M.S. or Ph.D. in Operations Research, Engineering, or comparable field providing in-depth knowledge of simulation and/or optimization
  • Experience in applying operations research techniques in practice for research or business problems is preferred
  • Hands-on experience with supply chain, logistics, manufacturing, finance, product management, pricing or other business functions is a plus but not necessary
