This posting is for a Coatings Application Scientist in the Transportation and Industrial Coating Application Development Group located in Kingsport, Tennessee. The selected individual will support Eastman’s Coatings and Inks business by technical development of new products and applications for the industrial coatings segment.


Job Responsibilities:


• Plan and conduct research to develop and commercialize innovative products for industrial coatings applications.
• Apply deep understanding of industrial coatings and regulatory requirements to develop and test new resin technologies that enable differentiated performance, reduced cost and increased efficiency.
• Determine fitness-for-use criteria for specific industrial coatings applications and reduce these to fundamental resin characteristics using knowledge of coatings structure-process-property relationships.
• Executes fitness-for-use testing and works closely with the synthesis team to fine tune resin compositions to achieve best performance.
• Provide technical support to manufacturing, engineering, and QC organizations during product scale up and commercialization.
• Develop new technical literature to support new products or techniques.
• Serve as a resource for internal and external customers on market specific product and process technology.
• Establish peer level connect with the external technical community in order to maintain an up to date understanding of market dynamics, regulatory trends and competitive intellectual property.
• Follow all laboratory quality and safety standards.
• Oversee testing of coatings to industry standards.
• Support quality, health, and safety initiatives as they relate to formulation, material safety, and technical datasheets.
• Travel to customers to discover needs, match fitness for use characteristics with product offerings, and support the opportunity through qualification.
• Mentor and support development of technicians.



Required Education: 
Masters degree of Science in Polymer Science, Coatings Science, Chemistry, Chemical Engineering or a related field is required
Ph.D is preferred.


Additional Requirements:

• 10+ years of relevant technical experience is required, including a track record of leading technical projects in industrial applications such as protective and coil coatings.
• Proven track record in product innovation and commercialization of new technologies for industrial coatings segments.
• Experience in value chain engagement to drive commercialization of new offerings for the industrial coatings industry.
• Good understanding of the regulatory trends in the industrial markets and implications to the overall technical strategy.
• Strong background in formulation, application and testing of coatings.
• Must have excellent communication skills and the ability to work closely with and as a part of a global cross-functional team with a sense of urgency and focus.
• Experience with experimental design (DOE), formulation, and problem solving are desired.
• An understanding of coatings manufacturing as it relates to resin, polymers or coatings is desirable.
• Knowledge of waterborne and solvent borne coatings technology is highly preferred.
• Understanding of stage gate project management techniques is desirable.
