Responsibilities

This posting is for an experienced Applications Research Scientist in the Care Solutions Division located in Kingsport, TN for Eastman Chemical Company.  This position will steer new product development in support of businesses within Eastman from an expertise in Cellulose and Cellulose Esters. Particularly this person will translate structure function properties of Cellulose and Cellulose esters to the development of new products for the Home and Personal Care markets. The selected individual for this role will correlate understanding of structure function properties in regards to performance characteristics of materials, phase behavior in emulsions, bio-degradation and relationship with components of formulated products. The ideal candidate will have fundamental knowledge and experience in cellulosic chemistry, while developing knowledge base of the Home and Personal Care markets. She/he will support on-going synthesis and scaleup efforts of new product development and capture and translate learnings to provide support of advancing on-going Eastman technology efforts.

The selected individual for this position will be required to: 

  • Apply deep understanding of cellulosic chemistry to advance new product development efforts.
  • Plan and coordinate research efforts between applications, bio-degradation, scale-up and analytical sub-teams.
  • Join the application teams in customer visits in the Home & Personal Care markets.
  • Be externally visible as recognized specialist in the area of Eastman Cellulose technologies.
  • Good understanding of regulatory and consumer trends in the Home & Personal Care markets.
  • Author technical literature to support new product launches.
  • Develop relationships and collaborate effectively with internal subject matter experts and external partners such as customers, independent laboratories, and universities.
  • Communicate results effectively to, but not limited to business, marketing, technology, and manufacturing stakeholders. 
  • Mentor and develop junior scientists/technicians.
  • Champion safety in and out of the laboratory.

Qualifications

  • PhD level knowledge in either Polymer Science, Chemistry, Chemical Engineering or related field.
  • Minimum of 5 years industrial experience of successful application development in areas including, but not limited to personal care cosmetics and OTC drugs.
  • Proven track record of translating innovative ideas to product concepts.
  • Strong background in correlating analytical results to product characteristics.
  • Excellent communication skills and the ability to work closely within a global team.
  • Demonstrated influencing skills across a wide range of disciplines.
  • Located in Kingsport.
  • Travel (up to 20% of time) to domestic and international locations for customer engagements, industry trade shows and technical conferences.
