Job Description:

This is a full-time position based in Kingsport and will report to Global Sourcing Director, Indirect Materials and Services.  The Sourcing Manager leads category strategy development, leads sourcing events and conducts category management activities for one or more categories of spend, with the goal of achieving significant initial cost reductions, while maintaining/improving product quality and supplier service levels.  The Sourcing Manager continuously applies the 4-step procurement framework to categories, identifies efficiency and cost reduction opportunities, and facilitates resolution of conflicts with suppliers and customers over delivery and payment issues.  The Sourcing Manager works closely with key stakeholders in functional member organizations and in corporate functions to execute effective cost reduction strategies and implementation plans.


Job Responsibilities: 

  • Build commodity category strategies by leading a cross-functional, category team
    • Create the situation assessment for the category including internal and external assessments, analysis of the business requirements, value chain and capability assessments (SWOT, 5-Forces, SCP, cost curves, etc.)
    • Lead option generation that includes commercial, specification and demand levers and choices of what we will do and what we will not do
    • Lead and engage in multiple reviews including internal team reviews as well as with members of the business management team and senior leaders
    • Develop the activation plan and the transition of the plan to the category team and sourcing board
    • Prioritize the category strategy development to align with business, technology and manufacturing requirements
  • Conduct category management activities
    • Lead initiatives that deliver the value (cost savings or value to functional area) utilizing project management skills and change management techniques
    • Track the performance of assigned spend category to understand price and volume variances; make adjustments to approaches based on results.
    • Develop and lead supplier relationship teams, where applicable, to drive continuous performance improvement (annual target development, quarterly progress, etc)
    • Monitor market drivers for potential changes and impacts to assigned categories
    • Develop year on year forecast of price impacts by category
    • Conduct sourcing board reviews with functional stakeholders to update them on the status of a category, identify additional actions and make adjustments to strategy where necessary.
    • Develop supplier engagement plans annually for major suppliers.
    • Conduct supplier development activities to identify additional potential suppliers.
    • Ensure pricing is managed per the contract, review all price change requests and negotiate/engage with suppliers to preserve or increase value to Eastman.  
    • Intervene as necessary to ensure delivery of the category strategy and expected value
  • Lead sourcing events for assigned categories
    • Lead and conduct RFI’s and RFP’s utilizing an eRFx tool as the preferred method of engagement.
    • Develop contracting structure utilizing approved templates as the preferred baseline document
    • Build the negotiation strategy and negotiate contracts and amendments as necessary to deliver the category strategy and deliver initial and ongoing cost advantage. 
    • Develop catalogs for appropriate materials and implement those with the assistance of the procurement COE to streamline the buying process


  • Bachelor’s degree required (preferably business, engineering, science, or supply chain)
  • MBA or advanced degree preferred.
  • 2 to 5+ years of experience (can be variable)
  • Previous exposure to purchasing, sourcing or commercial experience such as contract negotiations, market assessments, strategy frameworks (e.g. Porter analysis, SWOT analysis, etc) is preferred.
  • Project and/or program management background is helpful

  • Intrinsically strong ability to problem solve in a creative and structured manner (previous use of data and problem-solving frameworks e.g. Kepner-Tregoe, McKinsey 4-step is helpful)
