The Research Team Leader leads a team of Research Managers and Analysts (internal and external) who maintain BO Fact Bases, and design and execute research projects, so that BOs have the data and insights about markets, customers, and competitors that they need to  make both tactical, i.e. day to day, and strategic decisions.

 The Research Team Leader has extensive experience with all methods of research (primary, both quantitative and qualitative, and secondary), as well as with the capabilities of research vendors.  They are also familiar enough with the processes and issues of the BOs they support, and the analytics used in the strategy development process, to plan research projects (or mining of previous research) that will deliver the right types of data and insight to the BOs so that they can make high quality, timely business decisions.

  In addition, the Research Team Leader will be responsible for ensuring that their team is constantly building their expertise in data sources, in research methods, and in knowledge management, so that they can effectively meet the needs of the BO and Strategy Teams.



As part of the relevant BO and Strategy Teams, identify, prioritize, and document the data needs of the BO

•Identifies type, quality, frequency of data BO needs to make high quality tactical/short run decisions (i.e., market size/growth, competitor actions, price movements, share, etc.)
•Helps translate BO’s key strategic questions/issues into researchable business questions, and identifies type, quality of data BO needs to make high quality strategic choices


Manages the development and execution of the pipeline of commissioned research projects

•Ensures each BO/P&L has a pipeline of research projects that will (collectively) address its data needs, including projects that re-use or mine existing studies
•Ensures each projects has the best design, i.e., right method, sample, questions, cost/resource
•Run cross-BO process to ensure proper prioritization of timing, resources
•Assigns resources, including Eastman and vendor, to maintain high utilization and quality
•As needed, assist research managers in identifying and selecting research vendors, including overseeing the drafting of RFPs, reviewing proposals, and executing contracts and NDAs


Personally lead research projects, especially those of the highest importance and/or involving the most advanced research methods and analyses (at least 40% of Research Leader’s time)


Ensures that research managers and their teams deliver high quality reports (i.e., that data is properly scrubbed and structured, creatively analyzed and/or displayed, and is clearly tagged before inclusion in BO’s Fact Base)


Enable BO/Strategy Teams have as complete, up-to-date, accessible Fact Bases as possible

•Agree on how studies to be included in Fact Base should be categorized and tagged (i.e. number and type of categories, amount and nature of annotation, etc.)
•Train BO and Strategy Team members, as well as Research team members, how to retrieve data from Fact Base, and use it appropriately
•Work with BOs to establish accountability, process for maintaining their Fact Bases
•Periodically quality control BO Fact Bases (completeness, freshness, etc.), and make recommendations about which gaps should be filled, in what order
•Master multiple research methods and tools (primary and secondary) so as to be able to both lead teams successfully in using those methods and to teach those methods to others.
•Have a strong, broad knowledge of research vendors, and of best practices in research vendor management.
•Have a strong understanding of Eastman’s strategy methods and process, in order to act as a successful translator between Strategy, BO, and Research teams.


•The position requires a Master’s degree in Market Research, Business Administration, or related field of study plus 5 years of experience.  



•The position requires proven leadership and management skills as well as excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
•Experience in market research within a business-to-business or business-to-consumer environment is required.
•Experience in developing business and/or product strategies within a business-to-business or business-to-consumer environment is a plus.
•Demonstrated experience with project management skills leading multi-functional teams is required.  
•Must demonstrate strong strategic thinking and analytical capability and the ability to work in a complex and diversified environment. 
Position requires regular interaction with Vice President and Executive levels within the company and, as such, should have the personal “presence” and communication ability to successfully manage these interactions.
