Nature of Position:

The main purpose of the role is to support the Aviation Fluids business through Research, Development and Product Support activities.  The individual will be responsible for supporting existing base business and new turbine oil product development with a key emphasis on developing better scientific understanding relating to corrosion science and materials compatibility within the lubrication regime of a jet engine and the application of such learnings.


Principal Accountabilities:

• Drive new turbine oil R&D efforts supporting delivery of the Multi-Generational Product Plan for the aviation fluids business

• To develop new expertise in corrosion science, fluid compatibility and related testing methodology supporting the definition and delivery of the R&D strategy for the aviation fluids business

• Support the Technology Manager in evaluating opportunities for incorporating innovative approaches to new R&D initiatives utilizing fundamental understanding of materials and related tribological properties

• To develop and enhance relationships within the wider Eastman technical community to cross-fertilize technological concepts, share innovative findings and seek technology acquisition opportunities

• Seek to enhance Eastman's technology capabilities through liaison with external academic institutions having specific expertise in areas of tribology, surface science and other lubricant-related technical disciplines

• To lead the portfolio maintenance for current products including product support activities and customer trouble-shooting

• Active involvement in the safety and operational integrity performance of the Aviation Fluids Technology team and ensure compliance with all Eastman HSSE standards

• Provide support and guidance as requested to maintain and protect all Intellectual Property relevant to the Aviation Fluids Technology area

• Seek opportunities for new innovative means to demonstrate the technical aspects of turbine oil performance to a non-technical audience (‘out-of-the box’ demonstration of claims supporting relevant technical marketing platforms)

• In conjunction with the OEM team, provide specialist product support to the Technical Services function

• Supervision/mentoring of research technician(s) in support of key product developments, product support programs and fundamental tribology learnings


Required Degree:

• A PhD degree in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering or Material Science from an accredited college or university is REQUIRED


The candidate should also possess:

• Experience in new product development including expertise in experimental design principles (knowledge within lubricant-related disciplines would be a distinct advantage)

• Working knowledge and practical experience in aspects of tribology, corrosion and material science including techniques for evaluation

• A strong desire to learn and innovate within both established and ‘blue skies’ areas of chemistry, product evaluation and analytical assessment associated with understanding tribology effects related to the design and operation of jet engines

• Strong interpersonal, networking and communication skills across all levels of management - internal and external stake-holders

• A willingness to ‘dig deep’ to understand the 'bigger picture' in relation to the niche and specialist world of aviation lubricants

• Ability to be flexible and demonstrate 'out-of-box' thinking skills

• HSSE minded

• Strong presentation skills and self-confidence to promote innovative scientific thinking and specialist learnings to internal and external groups of aviation industry professionals
