This posting is for a Ph.D. Polymer Chemist/Polymer Scientist in Applications Innovation, Polymer Synthesis Innovation group for Eastman Chemical Company located in Kingsport, Tennessee.

 

The selected individual for this position will:

•  Translate market needs into product concepts and subsequently develop the concepts into commercial products for Eastman's existing and developing businesses

•  Execute effective experimentation programs involving primarily laboratory-scale synthesis of polymers, including polyesters, polyols, cellulose esters, etc. and to a lesser extent formulation development, application testing, process development and scale-up of product concepts

•  Conduct literature searches and laboratory experiments at the bench

•  Direct work of technicians

•  Analyze results, solve complex problems, and document conclusions

•  Work in and lead multidisciplinary teams (technology, manufacturing, business, marketing) to innovate and develop new commercial opportunities for Eastman

•  Provide information to business organizations with respect to advances in the key technologies employed in manufacturing and participate in the development of business organization technology strategies

 

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.

 

Education:  Ph.D. in Polymer Chemistry, Polymer Science or related field from an accredited college or university is required.

 

The candidate must possess:

•  Experience in preparation of small molecule organic compounds or polymers

•  Experience in carbohydrate and/or polysaccharide chemistry is desirable, but not a requirement

•  Experience in designing, evaluating, and interpreting complex reaction systems

•  Demonstrated creativity and a desire to solve challenging and complex problems

•  Exhibit a high level of initiative and self-motivation

•  Broad interests and willingness to take on relatively undefined challenges

•  Strong project management and team leadership skills

•  Excellent oral and written communication skills

•  5+ years of experience in chemical industry is preferred
