Eastman's Corporate Analytical Division has an immediate opening for an NMR Spectroscopist in Kingsport, TN.


Job Duties:

• Perform analytical test of R&D products, raw materials using NMR and being able to plan and conduct complex laboratory experiments, evaluate and interpret data.

• Experience collaborating with diverse teams and demonstrated ability to work independently and with minimal supervision are a must. Consult with scientists and engineers to conduct analyses of research projects, interpret test results, or develop appropriate nonstandard tests

• Design and execute studies with minimal supervision 

• Experienced with NMR acquisition and data analysis software.

• Maintain open access facility and provide training and guidance to other scientists

• Excellent oral and written communication skills and being able to prepare technical reports, publications and oral presentations with minimal supervision. Evidence of publication record is a plus

• Review laboratory data for accuracy, consistency and completeness; identify results with potential issues requiring further investigation.

• Coordinate and advise laboratory personnel in test procedures for analyzing components 

• Analyze organic and inorganic compounds to determine chemical and physical properties, composition, structure, relationships, and reactions, utilizing chromatography, spectroscopy, and spectrophotometry techniques

• Assist and use NMR techniques to assist laboratory R&D synthesis in organic chemistry with a focus on monomers and polymer synthesis. Interpret and communicate synthesis results

• Work with Technical/Engineering Group to develop/scale-up processes from lab-scale to production

• Knowledge in additional orthogonal analytical techniques such as LC-MS, IR and UV-VIS spectroscopy is a plus


Required Education:

  • Ph.D. Degree in Chemistry from an accredited institution


Required Experience / Skills / Knowledge:

  • 5+ years of industry experience
  • Experience in structure elucidation using solution NMR spectroscopy is required
  • Proficiency in troubleshooting technical instrument problems is required
  • Good practical knowledge of structural organic chemistry is required
  • Experience implementation of new experimental designs and exploring new NMR technologies and experimental techniques
