LSE Copy editor/proofreader– Global Marketing Communications

Job description

The copy editor/proofreader position is a part-time (approx. 20 hours/week) Limited Service Employee (LSE) position whose responsibilities ensure that Eastman marketing and corporate communications material is clear and consistent; complete and credible; well written; grammatically correct and accessible; and in accordance to house style and brand guidelines. It requires checking the correct use of trademarks, spelling and syntax, design, layout and making suggestions for any changes.



The job requires excellent writing and editing skills, a thorough and extensive knowledge of English grammar and usage, an understanding of layout and good design, good brand stewardship, and the ability to maintain a growing knowledge of Eastman and its products and services. Ultimately, a Content Editor helps produce engaging quality content that speaks to our audience and boosts engagement with our brand.


Work activities

  • Check copy for grammatical, spelling, and typographical errors, ensuring the consistency in hyphenation, capitalization, formatting, etc.
  • Mark copy with standard proofreading marks
  • Quality check final layouts and designs, ensuring titles and subtitles are consistent; page numbers are correct; contact information is correct; illustrations, photos, and tables are properly captioned and referenced; product names are on brand; content is consistent with approved copy; and the information flows
  • Liaise regularly with clients, authors, and publishers by phone and email
  • Check to ensure all required materials and paperwork are provided
  • Resolve queries, e.g., inconsistencies in style and content
  • Ensuring all work conforms to Eastman brand standards, checking consistency of house style and trademarks
  • Work in a timely manner to ensure jobs are prepared on schedule
  • Occasionally write copy to promote Eastman products and services or corporate initiatives
  • Work with Microsoft Word, Microsoft Outlook, Adobe Acrobat, the Internet, and project traffic software


Job requirements and qualifications

  • Detail-oriented and able to maintain a high level of ownership and accuracy on all work activities
  • Bachelor’s degree in English or commensurate work experience
  • Excellent spelling, grammar, syntax, and punctuation skills
  • A command and understanding of style and formatting
  • Knowledge of proofreading and editing marks
  • Familiarity with AP Style, The Gregg Reference Manual, and The Chicago Manual of Style or the ability to become quickly familiar with these references and others
  • Knowledge of Microsoft applications (especially Word and Outlook), Adobe Creative Suite, and project traffic software helpful
  • Knowledge of SEO helpful
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and oral
  • Excellent organizational skills
  • Ability to grasp complex business processes and organizational dynamics
  • Ability to make decisions and seek consensus
  • Good judgement to gauge which changes are necessary
  • Service oriented; a demonstrated team player
  • A scrupulous attention to detail
  • Ability to concentrate for extended periods of time
