This posting is for a Process Development Chemist in the Scale-up and Process Innovation Division and is located in Kingsport, TN.  The selected individual will contribute to growth  projects and platforms by working closely with Application Development Chemists, Scale-up Chemists and Scale-up Leaders to translate lab procedures for new products into successful commercial manufacturing processes using laboratory and pilot plant capabilities. 

 

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES

**Using knowledge and experience with lab, pilot and commercial-scale equipment, translate an initial laboratory procedure into a process which can be implemented in commercial equipment, while meeting customer expectations for quality and fitness-for-use criteria. 

**Using lab and pilot plant resources, develop and execute plans to characterize process sensitivities of new processes in order to enable scale-up, directing work of technicians, as needed, in synthesis, at-line analytical testing, and sample preparation to develop solutions for complex chemical or mechanical constraints at larger scale. 

**Collaborate with marketing, business, and applications development partners to understand key product attributes (fitness-for-use criteria).  Establish initial process specifications by making material across the range of key operating variables and work with applications development to determine where fitness for use is impacted.

** Assist analytical resources to develop appropriate methods as needed for commercial scale operation

** Review equipment capabilities at all scales, and recommend changes as needed to support scale-up and production of new products.  

**Document and communicate results and conclusions to both technical and non-technical audiences

**Follow process development and provide guidance at all scales and locations (lab, pilot, semi-works, toll manufacturer, Eastman commercial equipment).  Troubleshoot problems, guide engineers and operators, and recommend procedural changes as needed to enable success.

 

EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS

BS, or higher in Chemistry (ACS accredited)

 

EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS

* 5-10 years experience in chemical industry with 2-5 years exerience in scaling processes from lab to commerical operation

* Excellent oral and written communication skills

* Demonstrated teamwork skills and ability to work effectively with all role groups. 

* Intense interest in working on developing chemical processes through the entire scale-up process.
