This posting is for an Applications Research Scientist in the Films Application Research Technology group of Eastman Chemical Company located in Kingsport. The position will have responsibility for applications research and development supporting existing and developing businesses within Eastman related to film applications including architectural, automotive, and functional films. This involves direct customer engagement in the development of new opportunities for Eastman's existing and developmental solutions that support the films business. The selected individual for this position will also be responsible to translate market needs into product concepts and subsequently develop the concepts into commercial products. Candidates should be able to communicate effectively and function in an innovative, fast-paced, multidisciplinary team environment.

 

High-level responsibilities:

  • Develop a deep understanding of the functional attributes of a wide range of coatings formulation components used in the construction and application of functional films
  • Conduct feasibility studies and provide constructive feedback on prospective projects/technologies
  • Identify needs and opportunities through discussion with customers, sales and marketing personnel with the ability to translate those needs into innovative product solutions
  • Define, develop and test new innovative products using product development process in accordance with design control
  • Develop research plan and design experiments according to company’s timetable and translate into detailed technical work plans for safe and effective execution of process chemistry or applications development
  • Drive the Design process from conception to pilot testing, scale up, and commercialization
  • Propose a course of action based on data analysis
  • Support the transfer of technology from laboratory to production line, including participation on multidisciplinary product development teams
  • Anticipate technical difficulties and develop alternate strategies
  • Write patents, technical market support literature, technical presentations and publications, including internal research for publication, and support/liaison for external research conducted in line with the organization’s research strategy
  • Prepare and present written and oral reports to communicate with production, marketing, sales, and related functions
  • Train and mentor research associates

Required Education: A Ph.D. in Polymer Science/Engineering, Materials Science, Chemical Engineering, Chemistry or related field from an accredited college or university.

 

Required Experience: 5+ years of related experience in coatings chemistry, or a Master's degree with 10+ years of related experience.

  • Expertise with chemical formulations is required. Preferably with knowledge in coatings materials.
  • Product development experience in coatings field is highly desired
  • Familiar with various polymerization mechanisms, especially acrylic polymerization, urethane polymerization and related chemistries
  • Knowledge of and experience with both thermal and UV curable systems is preferred
  • Knowledge of physical properties, especially mechanical properties of polymeric materials
  • Understanding of structure-property relationships of polymeric materials
  • Strong knowledge of polymer and surface characterization techniques and design of experiments
  • Track record of successfully developing innovative solutions to technically challenging synthesis chemistry, formulation, or polymer product development problems
  • Strong organizational/time management skills and ability to prioritize
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills with the ability to distill data and effectively present key messages across the technical enterprise, as well as various groups such as marketing, manufacturing, regulatory, QA/QC, supply chain, customer service, sales and external customers and suppliers
  • Ability to work on concurrent projects
  • Team player
  • Detail-oriented
  • Experience with Stagegate process
  • Experience with film-based roll to roll processes is highly preferred
  • Knowledge of adhesion science fundamentals and key analytical characterization tools for adhesion is critical
