What You'll Be Doing → Job Scope

This job involves providing technical expertise in relief design to ensure our facilities meet safety standards and regulations. It requires experience in relief design and knowledge of documentation needs. This person will be responsible for promoting consistency, accuracy and record retention for relief valve specification and sizing. This position requires working closely with manufacturing teams, safety experts, engineers, and the capital project team. The engineer will be part of the Hyderabad Process Safety Engineering group and will focus on pressure and vacuum protection systems/relief valve design.

 

As they advance in their career, this role can lead to more complex tasks like designing relief systems for distillation processes, training new hires, and rating heat exchangers capacities. They may also lead specific relief projects and work closely with site leaders, coordinating with different teams and engineers. 

The primary responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

• Conducting Scenario Analysis for Relief Design. Assess, design, and document vessels for potential overpressure and vacuum situations (both new and existing), including calculations for relief devices (PSV, RD, conservation vents), sizing of inlet and outlet lines, selection of sizes, preparation of datasheets, and summarizing relief/flare loads.

• Create, model, document, and communicate the requirements for pressure/vacuum relief devices and effluent management.

• Interpret HAZOP, PHA reports, and SIL studies to provide input for relief systems based on these assessments.

• Design overpressure protection for gas/vapor-filled systems using the depressurization concept.

• Conduct material and energy balance calculations according to process requirements to ensure adequate relief system design.

• Stay updated on corporate and industry relief practices and standards, including API 520/521, NFPA 30, and API 2000.

• Collaborate with manufacturing personnel, technical services, and subject matter experts to ensure that design recommendations align with company and industry relief protection standards and practices.

• Ensuring adherence to a consistent Relief Design work process.

• Collecting necessary information from the SharePoint sites and plant library to complete Relief Design calculations and documentation.

• Verifying the completeness of documentation, ensuring compliance with relevant standards and codes, clearly explaining assumptions, and maintaining thoroughness in documentation.

• Reviewing the installed system to confirm compliance with the design specifications and following established guidelines and practices.

• Assisting in the enforcement of consistency across processes. 

Required Qualifications/Job Requirements

• Master’s or bachelor’s degree in chemical engineering from an accredited university or college.

• Understand PFD, P&IDs, and equipment layouts, conceptual equipment layouts, process layout, utility layout and other block layouts.

• Understand plant process design with equipment sizing & utility load design calculation.

• Must have strong interpersonal, communication, collaboration, and consultation skills. This position will interact with personnel in all organizations.

• Must have the ability to communicate effectively through verbal and written means, and able to adapt communication to best reach the intended audience within or outside the organization.

• Strong customer focus, with demonstrated ability to solve complex issues and work in partnership with peers, Manufacturing, and other stakeholders.

• Ability to compile and analyze complex data. 

• Knowledge in application of industry standards, recommended practices, and codes (API, NFPA, ASME, etc.)

• Provide and communicate clear, concise, and timely reporting of project progress and accomplishments verbally and in writing. 

Preferred Qualifications

• 6 to 12 years of experience in chemical/petrochemical industry or related industry, preferably direct Relief design experience in process design or operations.

• Demonstrated project management skills.

• Proficiency with Microsoft Office programs

• Prefer knowledge in application and compliance requirements of regulatory codes: US Occupational Health and Safety Administration, Process Safety Standards

• Experience with the following software would be an advantage: SuperChems, ASPEN, HTRI, AFT ARROW, AFT Fathom
