Eastman has an immediate opening for a Lab Technician in their Akron Rubber and Analytical Laboratory.  The Rubber development team functions as both a research and quality control lab for Tire Additives business group.  They provide operational support to production facilities in the Americas, Europe, and Asia/Pacific regions. The lab works closely with the Crystex and Rubber Additive technical teams to provide research support in new product development and quality assurance of our existing products. Laboratory Technician position will report to the Rubber and Analytical Lab group leader. 


Responsibilities may include:

• Conduct rubber compounding and other technical experiments and projects

• Lead and participate on technical teams.

• Employ quality process control tools to provide reliable data.

• Develop hands-on and in-depth technical expertise in rubber testing.

• Work in a fast paced, results-oriented team environment to assist in developing new technologies related to tire industry market.

• Develop new analytical capabilities in support of commercial products and processes that may include:

• Simultaneously operate a variety of analytical instruments to test formulated rubber properties

• Material testing: including thermal stability, composition and mechanical properties.

• Use industry standardized testing methodologies, including associated software and hardware, to execute the test methods as prescribed.

• Develop new laboratory procedures.

• Report data via LIMS, SharePoint, and other electronic forms.

• Evaluation of experimental materials and measurement techniques.

• Formulation scale-up evaluations.

• Assist customers with process optimization and new applications.

• Work with internal customers in answering technical questions.

• Ability to documenting experimental work, including writing standard test methods and technical reports.

• Work safely and promote a safe work environment.


Candidate should possess the following:

• Laboratory Technician Qualified with 51 credit hours as described below.

• Desired Rubber processing experience (mixing, milling) and sample testing for standard rubber physical properties.

• Formal training in general laboratory procedures.

• Problem solving (math/science) skills and familiarity with statistical methods of analysis. 

• Initiative and the ability to work in a team setting. Clear and effective written and oral communication is essential.

• General computer experience including relevant software knowledge such as Microsoft package (Word, Excel, PowerPoint). 

• Preferred Bachelor’s or Associate’s Degree in basic science or technical training program

• Preferred polymer testing experience.


Educational Requirements:

Chemistry — 23 hours — Mandatory courses are General Chemistry I and II with labs, Quantitative Analysis with lab (can be taken within 1 year of employment if lacking), and Organic Chemistry I and II with labs.  Examples of other science courses to meet the 23 hours of Chemistry credit are:  Biochemistry, Qualitative Analysis, Physical Chemistry, Inorganic Chemistry, Instrument Analysis, Chemical Calculations, Environmental Analysis, Seminar in Chemistry, Chemical Research, Advanced Chemistry, Organic Synthesis, and Chemical Engineering Courses

Physics/Science — 4 hours - Mechanics Heat, Sound, Light, Electricity & Magnetism, Introductory Physics, General Physics, Biology, General Science

Mathematics — 3 hours - College Algebra, Geometry, Pre-Calculus, Calculus, Statistics, Math for Engineering Technologies

English — 6 hours - English Composition, Speech & Listening, Technical Report Writing, Grammar, Oral & Written Composition

Electives — 15 hours - Any course carrying college level credit except the following:  Military Science, Freshman Orientation, Physical Education, Music, Health
