Eastman has an immediate opening for a Process Engineer who will provide daily engineering support to the Operations team in Martinsville, VA.

The Process Engineer is responsible for leading technical efforts to support coating, laminating, and web conveyance for all product lines. The individual will maintain a strong knowledge base on existing products and use appropriate experimental design, troubleshooting skills and project planning to coordinate new product implementation as well as process and quality improvements. Position will be based in Martinsville, VA.   The Process Engineer must be capable of working in a matrix environment, working closely with R&D, Safety, Manufacturing and vendors to ensure successful execution of all business objectives. This position is designed to develop qualified candidates into future manufacturing and business leaders within the Martinsville Performance Films Facilities. 

 Key Responsibilities: 

  • Reports to the Manufacturing Technical Staff Manager under the Operations Organization
  • Active participation and full compliance with the site Total Safety Process (TSP)
  • Lead coating, conveyance and laminating process improvement across multiple product lines in a manufacturing facility 
  • Responsible for the gathering, monitoring, and analyzing of production data from all process data systems  
  • Provide support to R&D team during formulation development to optimize coatings for manufacturing use
  • Coordinate efforts with manufacturing and maintenance teams to ensure that existing and new equipment will match product line needs 
  • Participate in creating technical documentation in support of respective processes and/or product lines
  • Design and execute experiments with appropriate experimental methodology and data analysis, identify risks and issues and develop appropriate plans to address
  • Evaluate daily production results with regard to targeted capacity, yield, quality, waste streams, energy consumption and make corrections. Assist the operations team in troubleshooting problems when targets are not achieved. Troubleshoot daily operational issues –interface with operations and maintenance personnel as problems are addressed.
  • Identify trends in capacity, yield, quality, energy consumption, and operability, process parameters in order to identify potential issues in these areas and proactively solve problems. Interact with Process/Production Engineers as needed to address issues.
  • Develop capital projects (includes developing scope, conducting project safety reviews, generating estimates, serving as project manager when funds are approved and when needed, etc.). Develop all conceptual design, basic engineering and process-related input for detailed engineering deliverables. Interface with contract project engineering personnel if needed. Projects may address issues with process, utilities and/or plant infrastructure.
  • Provide training for operators, technicians, and other engineers around coating processes and equipment
  • Interact with business and production planning representatives to establish and implement production plans
  • Complete Management of Change documentation and temporary work instructions; improve procedures. 

Required Degree / Education: 

  • Masters of Science focused in web conveyance and/or coating or 2+ years experience with BS in Mechanical or related Engineering Discipline 

Required Skills/Knowledge/Experience:  

  • Masters of Science or 2+ years experience with BS – Mechanical or related Engineering Discipline
  • Previous experience should be in an Engineering or an Operations technical support role
  • 1 yr. Experience with Coating Applications, and Convection Drying or Roll to Roll Web Technology 
  • Demonstrated experience solving complex process problems related to web related defects.
  • Statistical Analysis certification or previous training such as Six Sigma, JMP, Minitab, DOE is required.
  • The ability to effectively communicate at all organizational levels.
  • Strong organizational skills, detail orientation, the ability to multi-task, meet deadlines, and prioritize work.
  • Proactive approach to fault-finding and troubleshooting, and to identify process improvements.

  Competencies /skills needed for the job:

  • Have a strong background in computer software applications such as Microsoft Office Applications
  • Strong written, listening and verbal communication skills as well as organizational and project management skills
  • Be a team player in a team environment
  • Be a self-starter and a self-motivator
  • Low amount of travel required (less than 10%)
  • Have the ability to respond to call outs and flexibility to work overtime and extended hours during week days (including weekends and holidays if needed)
  • Have a desire to make a measurable positive impact to plant performance and profitability
  • Have a desire to obtain hands on experience in a plant operating environment
  • Data driven in decision making – utilize statistical tools as appropriate
