Job Summary


This role is responsible for developing new products or modifying existing products enabling coating formulators to differentiate performance, reduce cost or increase efficiency.   The position reports to the Product Translation and Development group leader and will lead in converting market needs into product concepts for small molecule additives in support of coatings applications.


Responsibilities will also include: 


  • Develop next generation additives needed to expand addressable market and accelerate market penetration in the coatings industry.
  • Deeply understand competitive strengths of assets & technology vs. competition, current product limitations, and material structure-property relationships to develop winning multi-generational product plans that serves market needs.
  • Support product development and product launch needs for major innovation programs.
  • Work closely with applications development and marketing groups to define product improvement opportunities / gaps based on market segment specific fitness-for-use requirements.
  • Support/potentially lead stage gate projects needed to maintain and grow share in existing and adjacent markets.
  • Responsible for developing a library of viable options for overcoming inherent material performance gaps with existing product platforms.
  • Operate, maintain, and troubleshoot laboratory equipment, including coatings testing equipment, glassware, and analytical instrumentation.
  • Initiate, lead, and document the review and writing of technical reports and invention reports when appropriate.
  • Participate and/or lead on teams focused not only on specific project deliverables but also on improving the quality, reliability, and safety of work in the laboratory.
  • Provide in depth expertise of the chemistry, processes, and techniques for the specified area.



A minimum of a Master’s Degree in Chemistry or Chemical engineering is required.
A PhD in Chemistry or Chemical Engineering is preferred.
High proficiency in polymer and organic chemistry fundamentals.
Minimum of 5 years’ experience in developing new additives to meet or exceed market requirements; 10 years preferred.
Experience with Design of Experiments (DOE) is also preferred.
