The Applications and External Innovation group is looking for a Research Scientist to help drive innovation programs focused on developing new technologies in polymer materials using molecular scale modeling techniques.  An ideal candidate should have a background in chemical engineering, polymer science or materials science, knowledge of how to apply classical and quantum simulation methods to the study of the chemical and physical properties of macromolecules and their formulations, knowledge of structure-property-function relationships of polymeric materials, a proven track record of close collaboration with experimental polymer scientists, a willingness to learn new disciplines, familiarity with a variety of classical and quantum mechanical simulation software packages and the ability to contribute to the acceleration of early-stage development programs.  The candidate should be able to communicate effectively with technical and non-technical audiences and function in an innovative, fast-paced, multidisciplinary team environment.  This position reports to the Polymer Synthesis and Applications leader, and is based at Eastman’s site in Kingsport, Tennessee.


  • Design and development of polymer materials.
  • Utilize classical and quantum mechanical simulations to study the chemical, optical, thermal, mechanical, and rheological properties of polymeric materials and their formulations.
  • Develop and utilize simulation protocols to screen polymeric material performance.
  • Develop structure-property-function relationships to aid in materials discovery and application research and development.
  • Communicate insights from simulation results effectively to non-experts in a way that enables them to make decisions.
  • Willingness to explore and use other modeling technique (such as Finite Element Analysis, Computational fluid dynamics, kinetic modeling, machine learning, etc.).
  • Engage across the organizations and collaborate with other research and application functions and business units to identify key unmet needs of targeted customers.
  • Translate the identified needs into well-defined technical criteria for planning and execution of scientific projects 
  • Development and contribution to meeting project deliverables, individually and in team settings.
  • Communication of results through effective written documentation and oral presentations.


  • PhD in Polymer Science, Materials Science, Polymer or Chemical or Material Engineering with 0-5 years of relevant experience is preferred.
  • Broad background in polymer structure-property-function relationships.
  • Knowledge of polymer physical chemistry is desirable.
  • Knowledge of python or R is desirable but not required.
  • Familiarity with a variety of classical and quantum mechanical simulation software packages.
  • Excellent communication skills, verbal and written.
  • High level of initiative, with ability to work individually and in teams.
  • Excellent organization, planning and multi-tasking skills.
  • Experience with experimental design, data analysis and statistical tools.
