This is a Scale-up Chemist position for the Polymer Development Laboratory team located in Kingsport, Tennessee supporting existing commercial polyester production and circular economy initiatives of our Specialty Plastics business. The selected individual will assist in scale-up of new or improved polyester processes from lab to commercial scale and will provide technical support to manufacturing operations.  Project work will be conducted in the laboratory, pilot plant, and large-scale manufacturing facilities.

•    Lead process teams and support chemistry needs for the scale-up of new polyesters from bench/pilot units onto commercial lines, working closely with both research groups, development, and operations personnel
•    Support circular economy efforts as they apply to polyester synthesis and production of commercial products
•    Communicate with business and product development personnel to ensure customer fitness for use is met by scaled-up polyesters as they are commercialized
•    Understand and utilize the commercialization process to ensure all necessary testing, approvals, and reviews are completed efficiently
•    Work with appropriate engineers to ensure necessary capital is installed as necessary to meet process chemistry needs
•    Recognition and pursuit of IP through patents and trade secrets.
•    Work with analytical specialists to define and implement new testing for new processes
•    Communicate results and recommendations to team and management; document results in reports
•    Apply statistical tools effectively (six sigma, capability analysis, design of experiments)



5+ years of industrial experience with chemical/polymer process scale-up is required
•    PhD in Polymer Science; Organic Chemistry; or related field focused on polymer chemistry; or relevant postdoctoral experience
•    Strong background in synthetic organic and polymerization chemistry, and applied polymer science (physical, chemical, material and rheological characterization of polymers, etc.)
•    Industrial experience in laboratory synthesis of and safe handling of organic and organometallic compounds, catalysts, and polymeric materials.
•    Good structure-property understanding
•    Strong project management skills necessary
•    Supervisory and mentoring skills. 
•    Prior experience leading technical teams.
•    Ability to thrive in a dynamic and collaborative team environment
•    Track record of innovative thinking and technical accomplishments and utilization of analytical tools, technical knowledge, data, computational and statistical tools, etc. to solve technical challenges and enhance chemistries and process development.
•    Excellent oral and written communication skills to work in a team environment
