This posting is for an experienced Applications Research Scientist supporting the Sensory Care Division of Eastman Chemical Company.  Located in Kingsport, TN, this position has responsibility for new product development in support of Home and Personal Care businesses within Eastman.  In particular, this role will build fundamental technical knowledge in the use of cellulose esters for personal care applications, such as color cosmetics and skin applications. The ideal candidate has fundamental knowledge and experience in the physico-chemical aspects of personal care products and she/he will be responsible to translate market needs into product concepts and subsequently develop those concepts into commercial products.  Candidates should be able to function effectively in an innovative, fast-paced, multidisciplinary team environment. 

The selected individual for this position will be required to: 
•    Evaluate existing commercial successes to identify new business opportunities and translate them to the broader market.
•    Apply fundamental expertise in surface, rheology, material, or polymer science and structure-property-processing relationships to generate technical solutions to customer needs across multiple markets and applications.
•    Support application development projects through effective laboratory experimentation and generating product prototypes for customer evaluations.
•    Lead multidisciplinary new product development project teams.
•    Develop relationships and collaborate effectively with internal subject matter experts and external partners such as customers, independent laboratories, and universities.
•    Communicate results effectively to business, marketing, technology, and manufacturing stakeholders.  
•    Protect intellectual property through patent applications and managing external communications with customers.
•    Travel (up to 25% of time) to domestic and international locations under short notice.


  • Ph.D. in Material Science, Colloidal science, Chemical Engineering, Polymer Science, Chemistry or related field.
  • At least 10 years of industrial experience of successful application development in areas including but not limited to personal care/cosmetics.  Expertise in cellulosic polymers and formulations is preferred. 
  • Demonstrated broad working knowledge in a wide range of polymer science skills including structure property relationships, polymer physics, characterization, and polymer testing.  Coating formulation expertise including solubility and solution properties of polymers, dispersions, interfaces, film formation, and cross-linking mechanisms is preferred. Knowledge of interaction of materials and formulations with substrates as skin, hair and fabric
  • Experience in developing, researching, interpreting, and use of Intellectual Property (patents and/or trade secrets).
  • Previous project leadership in an industrial setting is preferred. 
  • Strong oral and written communication skills.
  • Independent and driven individual with the ability to prioritize and handle multiple projects simultaneously within a multi-site cross-functional team.
