Eastman has an opening for a PhD Research Scientist to support the Heat Transfer Fluids business through Research, Development and Product Support activities.  The individual will be responsible for supporting existing base business and new next generation heat transfer fluid product development that is in line with the current business strategy. The role also requires development of novel test methods to evaluate heat transfer fluid performance and develop competitive data for marketing use.



  • Elucidate the fundamentals of organic heat transfer fluid chemical degradation pathways and the resulting impact on the product performance
  • Develop advanced application test equipment and methodologies to link current product property testing to performance in the field
  • Use the knowledge developed above to describe and demonstrate the real-world advantages of EMN products v competition
  • Propose, test, develop new HTF chemistries for unmet market needs
  • Support novel uses of existing HTF chemistries for novel applications (Process Fluids)
  • Work very closely with academic partners on existing projects supporting fundamental knowledge development
  • Support the existing business
  • Work safely and model safety behaviors
  • Lead technician(s)
  • Drive R&D efforts supporting delivery of the multi-generational product plan for heat transfer fluids



A PhD degree in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering or Material Science from an accredited college or university is required


  • Experience in new product development including expertise in experimental design principles
  • A can-do problem-solving attitude
  • A strong desire to learn and innovate within both established and ‘blue skies’ areas of chemistry, product evaluation and analytical assessment associated with understanding heat transfer fluid chemical and physical performance properties
  • Strong interpersonal, networking and communication skills across all levels of management - internal and external stake-holders
  • A willingness to ‘dig deep’ to understand the 'bigger picture' in relation to the niche and specialist world of heat transfer fluids
  • Ability to be flexible and demonstrate 'out-of-box' thinking skills
  • HSSE minded
  • Strong presentation skills and self-confidence to promote innovative scientific thinking and specialist learnings to internal and external groups
